Samohi believes that personal integrity is basic to all solid achievement and that students will reach their full potential only be being honest with themselves and others. Samohi also believes that academic integrity is basic to the progress of the school community toward rich learning and the respect of outside communities. Samohi expects all students to respect the educational purposes underlying all school activities and also expects administration, faculty, and staff to provide an environment that encourages honesty. Students caught cheating will receive a zero on the assignment. |

Cell Phone and Other Electronic Devices Policy |

|
Controlled Substance Policy Unlawfully possessing, using, selling, being under the influence of, or otherwise furnishing to others a controlled substance or alcoholic beverage, or intoxicant of any kind, at any school activity or on any school district or adjacent property, is considered to be a threat to the educational process. For the offenses indicated, the student, under guidelines indicated below, may be subject to suspension, transfer to another school, expulsion and/or an obligation to complete the district counseling requirement. Discipline Referrals A Discipline Referral is completed by a faculty member when a student violates a class or school rule. Sample offenses include profanity/vulgarity, disrupting class, and defiance (refusing to do what a teacher or any school staff person asks). School staff persons have disciplinary authority anywhere on campus and at all school events. Serious violations of the Education Code such as fighting, smoking, and use or possession of alcohol, drugs or weapons will result in a student being referred for suspension or expulsion. |

Dress Code In accordance with policy set forth by the Santa Monica-Malibu Board of Education (BP5132) students shall not express themselves in ways that are "obscene, libelous, or slanderous." In its desire to keep district schools and students free from the harmful influence of gangs; the Board also prohibits "the presence of any apparel; jewelry, accessory, notebook or manner of grooming which by virtue of its color, arrangement, trademark, or any other attribute, denotes membership in any such group." Students who violate any part of this dress code will be given an opportunity to change into their own clothing or to school-provided alternative clothing. The Administration reserves the right to make final determination as to the appropriateness of dress. |

Forbidden on Campus
Students found in possession of the above listed items will be suspended for a maximum of 5 days and possibly recommended for expulsion. Students, lockers and personal receptacles are subject to search, and forbidden items are subject to seizure and / or confiscation. |

Gambling |

Hat Policy Santa Monica High School will permit students to wear hats and caps on campus in order to protect students from the sun. All students are required to adhere to the following guidelines when wearing hats or caps on campus.
Students who violate any part of this hat policy will be given the opportunity to remove the hat, cap or other head covering. If this corrective action does not result in a positive outcome, students will be considered in defiance of authority and additional disciplinary action will be imposed. |

Hazing Policy As defined by the California Education Code "hazing" includes any method of initiation or pre-initiation into a student organization or any pastime or amusement engaged in with respect to such an organization which causes, or is likely to cause, bodily danger, physical harm, or personal degradation or disgrace resulting in physical or mental harm, to any student or other person attending any school; but the term "hazing" does not include customary athletic events or other similar contests or competition (California Education Code Section 32051). |

Sexual Harassment The Board of Education prohibits sexual harassment of any student by any person. Teachers shall discuss the policy with their students in age-appropriate ways and students will be taught that they need not endure any form of sexual harassment. An student who engages in sexual harassment may be subject to disciplinary action up to and including expulsion. |
