What is ACE?? It stands for Architecture, Construction & Engineering. These are the three primary fields within the huge industry responsible for developing the built environment, including roads, tunnels, dams & bridges, and buildings of all sorts. What do Architects do? Architects design the project. The Architect is usually the primary design contact with the owner of the property, and they normally take the lead role in design. Architecture is a blend of science and art, and there are many varying jobs within the field of architecture. What do Engineers do? There are many kinds of engineers, just as there are many kinds of doctors, each specializing in one or more aspects of engineering, such as structural or electrical. Engineers normally work through the Architect. Engineering is a creative application of science and mathematics. What do Contractors do? Contractors are the companies that convert the design work of the Architect & Engineers into physical reality. There are General Contractors, who usually work directly for the owner, and Subcontractors like electricians and plumbers, who work for the General Contractor. Just as the Architect takes the lead in the design, the General Contractor takes the lead in the construction. There are various different careers within the Construction field. What is the ACE Mentoring Program? It is a volunteer program sponsored by companies in the Architecture, Construction and Engineering fields, designed to educate young adults about our industry and assist them in making career decisions. We focus the program on large city schools because that is where we see the greatest need for our assistance. When does this program take place? After school every other week on (WEDNESDAYS) from 4 PM to 6 PM in B100 however there are times throughout the year that the meetings will be off campus, and the ACE Program does provide transportation to and from the event back to Samohi. During the first phase of the program (1st semester) the meetings will be every other Wednesday, however in the second phase of the program (2nd semester) students will be meeting every week on Wednesdays. Why do these companies sponsor the ACE Mentoring Program? There are many reasons, but the biggest are: because we find the ACE industry to be a fascinating and satisfying way to earn a good living, and we want to share this with young people who might be appropriate for these careers; and because we care about helping young people make good decisions about their futures. How do I get involved with ACE? Just fill out and return the application package you receive today. It must be turned-in no later than Wednesday 10/21/09.
