EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

Samohi Homepage

Nurse's Office

In preparation for a real emergency or disaster periodic emergency drills are conducted to ensure that our safety procedures are understood and correctly implemented.

  • A "drop, cover, and hold" command is given to students, who then seek cover under desks and tables. They are also instructed to move away from buildings and overhead structures.

  • Students and staff are directed to evacuate classrooms and move to an emergency assembly area.
  • The school principal establishes a command center. A first-aid station is set up and emergency supplies are distributed.

  • All gates except the "REUNION GATE" are locked. Main utility lines are inspected and shut off if necessary.

  • A "Search and Rescue" team inspects all classrooms, office, closets, restrooms, library, labs and other work spaces.  Reports are made to the command center.

  • Injuries are assessed and first aid is administered by qualified personnel. A damage estimate is also taken. The District "Emergency Operations Center" is contacted by radio or telephone. The fire department and paramedics are summoned, if necessary. Portable radios are tuned in to radio stations KFWB(980 AM), KNX (1070 AM) or KCRW (89.9 FM) to determine the extent of damage to outlying areas.

  • STUDENTS WILL BE RELEASED ONLY TO THOSE INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE NAMED ON THE EMERGENCY CARD.  TO PICK UP STUDENTS, PARENTS/GUARDIANS SHOULD REPORT TO THE REUNION GATE.  STUDENTS WILL NOT BE RELEASED WITHOUT PARENTAL AUTHORIZATION.  NO STUDENTS WILL BE PERMITTED TO WALK OR BIKE HOME.  IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT PARENTS KEEP EMERGENCY CARD INFORMATION UP TO DATE.

  • "REUNION GATE" is USUALLY located on 4th Street at the gate between the track and the Doubletree Hotel. Parent/Guardian need to bring proof of identification.   Please park at the Civic Auditorium.  Be patient, it will take a while to escort your student.  Our first priority is the safety of all students and staff.  The secondary Reunion Gate would be at 7th and Michigan.

72 HOUR STUDENT MEDICATION DISASTER PLAN

The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District is aware Southern California may experience a major disaster/earthquake in the relatively near future. In the event of such a catastrophe, we are concerned about the health and welfare of our students and employees.

Each of our sites has formulated a plan to protect those in our care, and have had practical drills so the staff members, students, and parents will know what to do. Of real concern is the health of those students and employees who require daily medication, such as insulin or seizure medication not normally administered during the school day.

Therefore, we ask you to send a 3-day supply of your child's necessary medications to the school's health office. It must be in a container labeled by the pharmacy with the following information:

  • Child's name
  • Medication name
  • Dosage schedule
  • Doctor's name
  • Doctor's phone number
  • Expiration date of the medication

Please send a written request, signed by a parent and the physician, for the medications to be administered by school personnel. Forms for this request, as well as answers to you are available through your school nurse.

At the end of the school year, the medication will be returned to you. No medications will be carried over from one school year to the next.

Your understanding of and cooperation with this request are greatly appreciated.
