Drug and Alcohol Awareness Presentation
Guest speakers will provide information on “current trends and issues”, why students use, signs and stages of use, and how to speak with your student about use and resources available. This presentation will coincide with student presentations on this issue to facilitate parent communication.
We will start with a short presentation about supporting Measure SMS.

PTSA College Panel
This is one of our most popular evenings. Drop by anytime from 5:30-7:00 for the Student Resource Fair in front of Barnum. Representatives from local ACT/SAT Prep vendors and college counselors will be available to ask questions and provide information. Then, at 7:00 pm, join us in Barnum for the College Panel featuring representatives from Cal State, UC, SMC and private universities. First, each will speak about their individual admissions process and what it takes to be a successful applicant, then parents will have the opportunity to ask questions.

“Student Scheduling - What to Pick - How to Help Your Student Be Successful”
Principal Shelton, Samohi Department Chairs, Counselors and others will help you understand scheduling options and how to best guide your student in selecting classes. We want our students to be challenged, successful and happy! Scheduling meetings for 2018-19 start in January so come and be prepared!

What it Means for Your Student, How to Speak with Your Child About Digital Media - Cafeteria, 7:00 pm - this is a critical topic for all parents and will start with a presentation about the various digital media options available to our students and how their digital footprint can impact their future.

PTSA Spring College Night (breakout sessions to follow)
Unless you are a senior parent, you will want to attend this evening! We start in Barnum with a presentation about college admissions and then have a series of “you pick” breakout sessions including things such as “financial aide, scholarships and grants”, “athletes”, “UC application tips”, “private school application tips”, etc.

Knowing how to speak with your child, communicate concerns, get them to to feel comfortable confiding in you - these things are all very important to help our students navigate the teenage years.

Our guest speaker will clarify for parents many complicated and delicate situations that our teens face and provide specific tools to start constructive conversations with teens about these important topics.

- Sexual harassment (at school)
