Samohi PTSA Meetings 2017-18


Samohi PTSA, in collaboration with Principal Shelton, has planned a series of relevant and dynamic Parent Education Evenings for 2017-18.  As a community, we all need to work together to support and empower our students.  Parent Education Evenings are designed to support our parents in being informed about the issues impacting our students.  Please “save the dates” and plan on attending.

7:00 p.m., Barnum Hall
"Welcome Back Event" This is a “not to miss” event and will feature our Principal, House Principals, ASB Coordinator, PTSA President, Counselors, College Center Representatives and soooo many more. This is a great way to start the year informed about Samohi initiatives, “rules of the road” and so much more.

"Drug and Alcohol Awareness Presentation"
Representatives from SMMPD, the Claire Foundation, the medical community and SMMUSD Mental Health will provide information on “current trends and issues”, speak about why students use, signs and stages of use, how to speak with your student about use and the resources available.  This presentation will coincide with student presentations on this issue to facilitate parent communication.

"PTSA College Fair "
This is a major event for Samohi and features representatives from over 100 colleges and universities as well as presentations about college readiness. This is a great way to learn more about
options for secondary education, obtain information and ask the representatives questions.

"PTSA College Panel"
This is one of our most popular evenings
and features a panel of representatives from Cal State, UC, SMC and private universities. Each will speak about their individual admissions process and what it takes to be a successful applicant. Then we will have an opportunity for parents to ask questions. Come early (5:30) for the Student Resource Fair in front of Barnum which will include representatives from locals ACT/SAT Prep vendors and college counselors. Drop by anytime from 5:30-7:00 to ask questions and obtain information

"Student Scheduling - What to Pick - How to Help Your Student Be Successful" - Principal Shelton, Samohi Department Chairs, Counselors and others will help you understand scheduling options and how to best guide your student in selecting classes. We want our students to be challenged, successful and happy! Scheduling meetings for 2018-19 start early January, be prepared! We will also speak about student support services to help your student survive finals.

"PTSA Spring College Night"
Breakout sessions follow - unless you are a senior parent, you will want to attend this evening!  We start in Barnum with a presentation about college admissions and then have a series of “you pick” breakout sessions including things such as “financial aide, scholarships and grants”, “athletes”, “UC application tip”, “private school application tips”, etc…

"Cyber Safety and Social Media Citizenship" - Samohi parent, certified Active Parenting Facilitator, KTLA television producer and public relations professional, Jennie O’Hagan will speak about cyber safety and the importance of social media citizenship. Jennie will help us navigate the various social medial options and discuss how we can help our children have balance, understand the importance of their social media image and possible pitfalls.

"5 Psychological Shifts You Can Make to Raise Exceptional Children"
Dr. Jennifer Johnston-Jones, family psychologist and founder of Roots & Wings Holistic Health Center will present on "5 Psychological Shifts you can make to Raise Exceptional Children”- an evidenced-based approach based on her upcoming book “Raise Yourself".

“The “Future” of Samohi – How our Campus is Evolving”
This is a great opportunity to learn about our new campus building which will include classrooms, new cafeteria, parking, and a 50 meter pool!  Architects HED/MRY will present plans and drawings of this new project which is expected to open in Fall 2021. Please join us to learn about the exiting changes that will be happening at our campus starting this summer.   All Middle and Elementary School parents are encouraged and very welcome to attend!

“How to Help Our Students Be Successful Adults”, “Now that I’m 18”; Financial Literacy and More
The title says it all, this is a not to miss presentation!  We all want our students to have the tools they need to be successful, productive adults.  This presentation will coincide with an education series provided to our seniors, but it is never too late to begin preparing your child for the future!
