ART HIGH AT THE ARMORY CENTER FOR THE ARTS Art High at the Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena offers various opportunities for high school students to gain valuable art experiences. Depending on student need and level of exposure, these opportunities include: R.O.P. classes in photography, video, design and letterpress; drawing and portfolio development; and the introduction of our portfolio lab for high school students. Classes are held in the Art Center's well-equipped campus facilities and are taught by professional artists and designers. Classes are designed for beginners as well as for more advanced students.Most classes meet on Saturdays for 10-week sessions, held in the fall, spring, and summer. CHOUINARD Chouinard at LA Rec and Parks is in full swing as we enter the start of the Fall term. With over 500 applicants but only 90 spaces in two locations, we are intent to service everyone who wants our program! Our new location is at Oakwood Park in Venice , which supplements our original location at EXPO Center in downtown LA. Our program features an excellent classroom component supplemented by studio visits to our great Adjunct Faculty members, plus museum and gallery visits, makes our program unprecedented for LA's teens. Students learn all aspects of the visual arts. Emphasis is on traditional methods of artmaking, with drawing classes centered on the figure. Students develop their visual and perceptual skills, learn the techniques of drawing, design, painting and sculpture, and develop a portfolio of their own work which is suitable for submission to more advanced art programs. Many of the program's graduates go on to higher education in the arts. Course curriculum conforms to California State Visual Arts/Performing Arts (VAPA) Standards for middle school. Each graduating class has a graduate exhibition, and each student receives a certificate of completion. Students are assisted with applications to the arts magnet schools and other high school art programs.Please note that students are not required to participate in the full two-year certificate program, and have the option of taking one course at a time. Contemporary artists lead workshops, art history lessons, and field trips to cultural sites. Park Studio is open to middle and high-school students who reside or attend school in the museum's immediate neighboring community. Acclaimed artists teaching Park Studio workshops have included Tim Rollins, Salomón Huerta, Lezley Saar, Frank Romero, and Gajin Fujita.
