Samohi Art Department - Painting 1 Gallery

Students select 2 pictures they find interesting and engaging, then complete 3 sketches illustrating different ways to combine the 2 images. The combination doesn't need to be realistic, but it should make some kind of sense. Students are encouraged to think beyond the obvious. Students' sketches are discussed during class and once adjustments, changes and suggestions are made, the final sketch is transferred to paper.
This exercise stresses composition by encouraging the artist to consider if all the negative spaces suit the image and to picture how the viewer will experience the piece. Images below created during the 2007-'08 school year.
