Prerequisites: Completion of Intermediate ELD and ELD Composition classes with a grade of "C" or better, or an apporpriate score on the CELDT. This class must be taken concurrently with the Advanced Composition class.
This college-prep course is designed to increase students' ability to read, write and speak at a higher level. Activities to increase student skills will be extensively based on reading essays, novels, short stories, and drama. First semester students will focus on developing their reading and writing skills in preparation for a literature-based curriculum that will demand a high level of literary sophistication. Concurrently taught are the elements of grammar, usage, mechanics, and writing.
Content Objectives:
- Students are introduced to literature through a variety of genres.
- English Learners improve their communication skills through carefully monitored and corrected class assignments in listening, speaking, reading and writing.
- Students will gain improved skills in the mechanics of writing, usage of correct grammar, and punctuation.
- Students will add to both their functional and academic vocabulary.
- Students will begin to recognize and develop a sense of "style" in their prose.
- Students will write creatively, discovering and clarifying their own ideas, beliefs and feelings.
Performance Skills/ELD Literacy Standards:
- Use prior experiences to understand text or visual media.
- Express initial and tentative interpretations of the literature read in class.
- Provide evidence of understandings of the human conditions exemplified in literature.
- Make inferences and draw conclusions about context, events, characters, and setting in literature read in class.
- Analyze and revise his/her own work to further develop the piece of writing, improve meaning, and sharpen its focus by adding or deleting details and explanations.
- Use information from the reading to apply to other settings and purposes to begin to change their own lives.

Promotion Requirements:
Completion of the course and Advanced Composition with a grade of "C" or better; a student may be mainstreamed into a regular English course based on teacher recommendation after taking this class or may take the next SE level English class if his or her skills need improvement.
