English Classes - Intermediate ELD


Intermediate ELD
EI, IN or EA score on CELDT
Grades: 9-12
Prerequisites: Score of EI-EA on the CELDT, a grade of "C" or better in Beginning ELD; transfer credit from anothe school for Beginning ELD. Students in this class must be concurrently enrolled in ELD Composition.

Course Overview:
This two hour class is for newly-arrived immigrants with intermediate level English skills as well as former non-English proficient students who have gained some mastery of basic communicative skills in English. Students will continue to improve their English proficiency through the areas of grammar, literature, spelling, written, and oral presentations. In addition, the English Learner will become acquainted with American traditions and customs, including school-wide culture and campus activities.

Content Objectives:
  • English Learners will gain more complex communicative proficiency in the English language through reading, speaking, listening and writing activities.
  • English Learners' self-confidence and interest in academic achievement will increase.
  • English Learners will continue to develop an understanding of English grammatical structure as well as writing conventions (such as spelling, for example) for more complex assignments.
  • English Learners will develop literacy skills that will prepare them to read literature assigned to their English-speaking peers.
Performance Skills/ELD Literacy Standards:
By the end of the course, students should be able to perform the following tasks which are aligned with the State of California's ELD standards:
  1. Provide evidence of understanding of the human condition exemplified in literature.
  2. Use prior experience to understand text or visual media.
  3. Identify and use conjunctions, interjections and prepositions in beginning level tasks.
  4. Explain concepts and opinions explored in the text or visual media.
  5. Initiate and sustain student dialogues, in small or large groups, about both social and academic topics.

  7. Write descriptive paragraphs and develop creative writing skills.
  8. Make oral presentations.

Promotion Requirements:
To progress to the SE level English class, English Learners must pass this class with a "C" or better. Students not achieving a "C" or better may be assessed for special learning needs, take summer school to improve their skills, or repeat Intermediate ELD during the regular school year for no credit.
