Prerequisites: The English Learner must be concurrently enrolled in Intermediate ELD or an English SE course. This course is not appropriate for students who are Beginning English learners.

Course Overview:
In this class, the students do a balanced combination of note-taking, activities, and labs which follows the state framework for Physical Science. The purpose of this course is to provide the students who are still struggling with the English language a rigorous, introductory physical science curriculum which will facilitate their vocabulary acquisition in all science classes. The class uses group work to help facilitate student learning.

Content Objectives:
  • Students will develop basic science skills (such as measurement, using lab equipment, and graphing information for lab reports)
  • Students will explore the relationship between science and consumers as well as the environment.
  • Students will apply their skills in a sample science discipline, such as chemistry.
  • Students will use the science lab.

Performance Skills/ELD Literacy Standards:
By the end of the semester, the English Learner will be able to perform the following skills.
  1. Express thoughts clearly and logically in lab write-ups, using academically appropriate vocabulary.
  2. Keep a notebook of classroom activities and lectures as a reference for tests.
  3. Take a written test using both short answer and oral questions.
  4. Improve both observation as well as organization and interpretation of data.

Promotion Requirements:
Students who are mainstreamed to Biology following this class should have oral skills commensurate with a score of EA or AD on the CELDT exam, a grade of "C" or better in this class, and recommendation of the teacher. Students who are mainstreamed to Environmental Biology following this class are recommended for the course by the teacher.
