U.S. History SE
IN, EA or AD score on CELDT Grades: 9-12 Prerequisites: The LEP student must have completed the 10th grade and be concurrently enrolled in Intermediate ELD or English 11 SE
Course Overview:
The main focus of this class is U.S. History in the twentieth century. Students review the development of the U.S. as a nation in a thematic sequence for the first few weeks of school. Then the students focus on events in the latter half of the nineteenth and the whole twentieth century in more depth.
Content Objectives:
- Students will become familiar with the United States' rise as a global power.
- Students will learn about the economic and social development of the United States in the 19th and 20th centuries.
- Students will develop short essay, timed essay, and document-based, analytical writing skills.
- Students will participate regularly in class group work, activities and discussions.
- Students will develop research, note-taking, and presentation skills.
Performance Skills/ELD Literacy Standards: By the end of the course, students should be able to perform the following tasks which meet the needs of English learners:
- Research, write and design an effective class presentation.
- Regularly complete homework assignments based on texts and handouts.
- Analyze documents for bias as well as for information.
- Identify point of view in a variety of historical documents.
- Read a textbook at near-grade level (for English-only peers).
In addition, the students will be familiar with the following time periods, including cause-and-effect relationships, leaders of the time periods, and important dates within the time periods:
- Colonialism
- The American Revolution
- The U.S. Civil War
- American Imperialism in Mexico, North America, Caribbean and Pacific
- The 1920's and the Harlem Renaissance
- The Depression and Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal
- World War II and the U.S. home front: the dropping of the atomic bomb
- Vietnam: a case study of the Cold War
- The Civil Rights Movement for women, African-Americans and Chicanos
- Immigration from the 1890's to modern times
