World History SE

Grades: 10-12
Prerequisites: The student must complete the 9th grade. The English Learner must be concurrently enrolled in Intermediate ELD or an English SE class.

Course Overview:
This course follows the state framework for 10th grade Modern World History/Geography. The class emphasizes the 19th and 20th centuries. The literacy skills taught in this course are part of a sequence developed by the Social Studies Department to build study skills, analytical skills and media awareness.

Content Objectives:
  • Students will improve note-taking and textbook-reading skills.
  • Students increase their historical knowledge and ability to empathize with a variety of people across time and culture.
  • Students trace current events to past ones, develop critical thinking skills and apply these skills to sources and writing prompts.
  • Students improve literacy through a variety of reading, writing, reviewing, and editing activities.
Performance Skills/ELD Literacy Standards:
By the end of the course, students should be able to perform the following tasks, which meet the needs of LEP students:
  1. Read a textbook and answer the questions at the end of the chapter meaningfully.
  2. In response to a prompt, formulate an opinion (either in writing or orally) and support it with historical detail.
  3. Make an oral presentation to the class.
  4. Predict a future event and argue persuasively for that prediction.
  5. Interview people for content-specific information.
  6. Use the library to research a topic.
  7. Rephrase information taken from texts or primary sources in his/her own words.
  8. Communicate effectively with group members to complete simple and complex texts.
  9. Write a short story and/or essay which includes an introduction, supporting evidence, and a persuasive conclusion.
In addition, the students will be familiar with the following periods of time, including cause-and-effect relationships, leaders of the time period, and significant dates within each time period:
  • The Rise of Democratic Ideals from Greek democracy to the Englightenment
  • The French Revolution and the Napoleonic Empire
  • Liberalism, Conservatism and Romanticism (as found in Latin America, for example)
  • The Industrial Revolution
  • Imperialism
  • World War I
  • The Rise of Totalitarianism and the Holocaust
  • World War II (emphasizing the events of the war and it outcomes)
  • The Cold War and its effects on Post-Colonialism
  • Modern World Problems and their effects on Immigration
Texts:
This class uses one of several district-approved texts, which may include A History of the World by Marvin Perry, or Modern World History by J. Spielvogel.

The Ancient World, The Age of Europe, The Modern Era - (Scholastic, Inc.)
Films include A Tale of Two Cities (1939), The Killing Fields, and clips from various movies such as Gallipoli, Tora! Tora! Tora!, The Longest Day, Saving Private Ryan, Triangle Factory Fire, The Molly Maguires, All Quiet on the Western Front, and PBS videos made available through a grant to the Mortensen Library.

Promotion Requirements:
Students who progress to mainstreamed U.S. History should be able to take English 11 in the mainstream, a grade of "C" or better in World History SE, and the recommendation of the teacher.
