Course Descriptions

FRENCH 1 P
Grade Level: 9-12
Meets UC/CSU requirements
Year course (5 credits per semester)
Prerequisite: Minimum grade of C in English/Language Arts class the previous semester and at least a C academic average.

Students will learn to read and communicate in French.They will listen, repeat, read and write in French, as well as learn about the culture and geography of France and other French-speaking countries.

Students will learn rapid and effective communication in French. Advanced courses enrich the students' earlier studies, providing a thorough experience in French language, literature, and culture.

FRENCH 2 P
Grade Level: 9-12
Meets UC/CSU requirements
Year course (5 credits per semester)
Prerequisite: Minimum grade of C in preceding semester French course.

Students will continue to learn rapid and effective communication in French. This course builds on the first year course and will enrich the students' earlier studies, providing a thorough experience in French language, literature, and culture. Students will learn additional verb tenses, grammar and vocabulary, and will be able to communicate, read and write in French.

FRENCH 3 P
Grade Level: 10-12

Year course (5 credits per semester)
Prerequisite: Minimum grade of C in preceding semester French course.

Students will continue to learn rapid and effective communication in French. This course builds on the second year course and will enrich the students' earlier studies, providing a thorough experience in French language, literature, and culture. Students will learn advanced verb construction, grammar and vocabulary, and will increase their knowledge of French history, literature and culture.

FRENCH 4 - Ideas HP
Grade Level: 11-12
Meets UC/CSU requirements
Year course (5 credits per semester)
Prerequisite: Minimum grade of C in French 3 or passage of placement test..

A chronological study of history and literature from the 17th-20th centuries, with additional work on grammar, writing, and culture. The class is conducted entirely in French; student responses are both written and oral. Students write compositions, perform skits, make an oral presentation of a research project, and attend cultural events and field trips.

FRENCH 5 HP - Genres HP
Grade Level: 11-12
Meets UC/CSU requirements
Year course (5 credits per semester)
Prerequisite: Minimum grade of C in French 4 or passage of placement test.

Students will increase their knowledge and appreciation of francophone language, culture and geography by studying literary genres (e.g. short stories, plays, poetry, cinema, novels, African literature, journalism and songs). The class is conducted entirely in French; student responses are both written and oral. Students write compositions, perform skits, make an oral presentation of a research project, and attend cultural events and field trips.
