Course Descriptions
Spanish 1 P
Grade Level: 9-12 Meets UC/CSU requirements Year course (5 credits per semester) Prerequisite: Minimum grade of C or better in English/Language Arts class the previous semester.
This course is an introduction to the Spanish language. Students will learn to read, write, speak, and listen in Spanish, and will develop an understanding of the history and culture of Spanish-speaking countries and communities. The components of grammar, including verbs, grammatical structures and vocabulary, will be emphasized.
Spanish 2 - 4 P
Grade Level: 9-12 Meets UC/CSU requirements Year course (5 credits per semester) Prerequisite: Minimum grade of C or better in previous semester of Spanish.
Students will advance their oral and written communication skills in Spanish with emphasis on vocabulary acquisition. Students will participate in oral presentations, class discussions, and write original compositions.
At level 3, students will be introduced to contemporary Hispanic literature in the form of short stories and plays. Level 4 will include a variety of literary forms: short stories; poetry; essays; plays, and current periodicals.
Students are encouraged to do original thinking and to contribute to classroom discussions.
Spanish 5 AP
Grade Level: 11-12 Meets UC/CSU requirements Year course (5 credits per semester) Prerequisite: Examination and Language teacher recommendation; minimum grade of B or better in Spanish 4.
This course prepares students for the Advanced Placement Exam in Spanish Language which covers the equivalent of a third-year college course in Advanced Spanish composition and conversation. It stresses oral skills, comnposition, and grammar. Extensive reading, writing, and special projects required.
Spanish 6 AP
Grade Level: 11-12 Meets UC/CSU requirements Year course (5 credits per semester) Prerequisite: Minimum grade of B or better in Spanish 5 AP, or passage of comprehensive oral and written examination.
This course prepares students for the Advanced Placement Exam in Spanish Literature, which covers the equivalent of a third-year college course in Hispanic Literature. Students will learn to understand lectures in Spanish, to participate actively in literary discussions in Spanish on modern Hispanic literary genres, and to analyze the form and content of literary works from Spain and Spanish America. Extensive reading and writing in Spanish required.
Spanish for Spanish Speakers 2 -4 P
Grade Level: 9-12
Meets UC/CSU requirements
Year course (5 credits per semester)
Prerequisite: Bilingual (English/Spanish) students only. Must be able to commuicate orally and in writing in Spanish.
Students will enrich and advance their understanding of the Spanish language with an emphasis on written composition, grammar, reading, and bilingual communication skills, including listenting and speaking.
Level 4 focuses on modern Spanish fiction, prose, and theater.
