Prerequisite: None
Scientific principles (including applications of physics), mathematical concepts, communication skills, and problem-solving techniques are taught through an activity-oriented approach.
Robotics, electronics, hydraulics. pneumatics, and computer design technologies will be explored by all students using the 6,000 square foot Design and Production Lab at Santa Monica High School.
The class is team-taught as a joint endeavor by the Science and Technology Departments with a class limit of 40 students.
Student Teams will research, design, and build projects for practical applications at the local level, such as the Gardening Angels Greenhouse Project at the high school, and local and national competitions such as the Electrothon Electric Vehicle Competition, and the JPL Robotics Competition.
Students will combine interdisiplinary skills to produce final products using computer integrated manufacturing (CIM) systems. These projects will include team-produced research portfolios, engineering drawings, production plans, cost estimates, technical reports, and finished products.
